In the recent year I started setting home automation, went with Zigbee mainly because sensors are cheap (many times 1$ from Ali express).
Some sensors can be used in a ways most people don't think of i'm looking for these ideas.
One idea I saw in this forum (don't remember the thread), use door sensor for a sliding garage door - I have a gate controller which I can trigger with a phone call, but I don't know the door state, using Zigbee door sensor I can know the gate state (event though the sensor is designed more to fit a regular door).

Other idea I thought of, is using vibration sensor to track when people step on the first step to enter/exit a property. Why not camera an using IVS rule? it's easier to add a vibration sensor and it doesn't depend on light conditions.
The main issues is where to place the sensor, if the step is tiled/concrete step and whether the vibration will trigger regardless of where the foot was placed.
Other idea was to make a rain meter, using a water leak detector (there is a ground moisture level sensor, but not sure if that's good for me), to know if I can skip an automated irrigation (API for actual rain drop is not accurate from what I checked).

Looking for other ideas using cheap Zigbee sensors, mainly related to home security/maintenance.
