Holy crap, $450 for a WD purple 10TB drive now!

I'm in the process of putting together an EmpireTech Dahua system for my home and have run into the hard drive brick wall. My preference would be to get a WD Purple, but I can't find any (or any other surveillance drive for that matter) at a reasonable price. For those have been in the market to purchase recently, where are you getting your drives?

start out used to get in the game for now.
The Western Digital WD80EZAZ (8TB) drive is generally considered a CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) drive, not SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording). It is commonly found in WD Easystore/MyBook enclosures and is known to behave as a CMR drive, often rebadged from Western Digital's Red or Blue lines. [1, 2]
Key Details:
  • Technology: CMR (PMR).
  • Capacity: 8TB.
  • Common Source: "Shucked" (removed) from external WD 8TB enclosures.
  • Performance: Generally stable performance, often 5400 or 5640 RPM. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
While some users initially suspected different variants (like the similar WD80EDAZ) might be SMR, consensus in data hoarding forums points to the 8TB WD80EZAZ specifically being CMR, making it suitable for RAID or NAS use. [1, 2, 3, 4]

anything that is not an SMR and spins at 5400 5640 RPM is going to record and playback OK.
I have a 5.0 TB white label WD( bought used on Ebay) back in 2020-ish and it works great in my PC for camera video storage.
It's paired with a WD 40PURZ 4Tb purple drive, and they retrieve alerts equally fast and playback good. on an older
i5-4590 Dell.

this thread cost me about $17 to post.
Why you ask?
Cuz somebody selling on ebay can post "facts" about their HDD's health.
And well dammit all, I have to have that software. :)
